MIAMI OPEN WTA 2025 PREVIEW

The Miami Open, inaugurated in 1985, has evolved into a premier event in women’s tennis, attracting top talent from around the globe. Initially held in Delray Beach, the tournament moved to Key Biscayne in 1987 and found its current home at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens in 2019. In 2024, Danielle Collins clinched the title, adding her name to the illustrious list of winners.
2025 Tournament Preview – WTA
The 2025 Miami Open is set to commence on March 18, featuring a 96-player singles draw. With a prize pool exceeding $8.9 million, the stakes are high, and the competition promises to be fierce.
Notable First-Round Matches and Potential Second-Round Highlights
- Emma Raducanu vs. Emma Navarro: A battle of the Emma’s, this match pits the 2021 US Open champion against the rising American star. Raducanu’s aggressive baseline play contrasts with Navarro’s strategic shot placement, making this a must-watch encounter. Radacanu will have to overcome wildcard Sayaka Ishii to set up the encounter, but she is heavily backed to do so.
- Dayana Yastremska v Belinda Bencic: Bencic has been a revelation this year and will need to maintain her level against her Ukrainian opponent. The winner will play Elena Svitolina in the second round, another great match to look forward to no matter who the opponent.
- Naomi Osaka v Liudmila Samsonova: If both advance, this matchup could be an early tournament blockbuster. Osaka, at her best, can be dominant but she’s not at that level just now. She will try to improve on her first-round exit at Indian Wells and build some momentum. Samsonova got to the quarterfinals of Indian Wells where she ran into eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. Samsonova will be favourite to advance but hopefully the Japanese lady can put on a good show.
Favourites to Watch
- Aryna Sabalenka: Holding the top spot in the rankings, Sabalenka’s powerful game makes her a formidable opponent on hard courts. Her consistent performances in recent tournaments position her as a leading contender. She will be determined to better her loss in the final of Indian Wells to Mirra Andreeva.
- Iga Swiatek: The 2022 Miami Open champion has demonstrated versatility across surfaces. Her tactical intelligence and heavy topspin forehand are assets that could propel her to another title. Swiatek also fell victim to Andreeva at Indian Wells, but at the semi final stage.
- Coco Gauff: Playing on home soil, Gauff’s athleticism and crowd support could drive her deep into the tournament. Her recent performances indicate readiness to challenge for the title. Gauff will be frustrated to lose in the last 16 of Indian Wells to the in-form Belinda Bencic. The draw in Miami has been much kinder so a quarter final appearance is expected in Miami with a possible tournament decider with Sabalenka in the semifinals.
- Mirra Andreeva: Fresh off her Indian Wells triumph, Andreeva’s confidence is soaring. Her ability to handle high-pressure situations at a young age makes her a potential disruptor in the draw. She was my dark hose in my Indian Wells preview, but can she achieve the Sunshine Double? It will be extremely difficult, but she no doubt has the skill and energy to achieve it. She beat Rybakina, Svitolina, Swiatek and Sabalenka in consecutive matches to win Indian Wells.
Dark Horses
- Madison Keys: Known for her powerful serve and forehand, Keys has the capability to outplay top opponents. If she maintains consistency, she could make a deep run.
- Qinwen Zheng: Zheng’s recent performances have showcased her potential. Her aggressive baseline game could pose challenges for higher-seeded players.
Conclusion
The 2025 Miami Open promises thrilling matches, with established stars and emerging talents vying for the prestigious title. As the second leg of the Sunshine Double, outcomes here could set the tone for the rest of the season. Tennis enthusiasts worldwide will be keenly watching as the drama unfolds on the Miami courts.
Can Andreeva complete the Sunshine Double? In my opinion, no! But I would love to be proven wrong..
Good Luck.
